Since its release on 3 April in German-speaking Swiss cinemas, A Minecraft Film has been generating a massive buzz across social media platforms. The hype, however, has come at a cost — particularly in the United States, where screenings have descended into chaos. Social media is flooded with images, videos, and firsthand accounts showing the aftermath of disrupted cinema halls.
Disorderly Behaviour and Chickens in the Cinema
Clips widely shared online depict cinema-goers launching popcorn and drinks into the air during the film. In a bizarre twist, some have even smuggled live chickens into theatres, holding them aloft in crowded auditoriums — a stressful ordeal for the animals and a nightmare for cinema staff.
In response to the disturbances, a cinema in New Jersey has already introduced new rules, banning unaccompanied minors from attending screenings. Dave Rose, owner of one of the affected cinemas, told NBC: “A group of teenagers damaged the seats and left a dreadful mess behind.”
He went on to say that the group had also been spraying hand lotion around the theatre. Much of the destruction appears to be linked to a particular scene in the film featuring a baby zombie riding a chicken, although the vandalism reportedly goes beyond that moment.
Director Praises the TikTok-Inspired Chaos
Swiss newspaper Blick reported that director Jared Hess has shown surprising support for the trend. He is quoted as saying, “It’s all about cheering and throwing popcorn.” The comedy film stars Jack Black, alongside Game of Thrones actor Jason Momoa, who appears in the film sporting long blonde hair and pink attire.
The current chaos echoes a similar incident from 2022 known as the “Gentleminions” trend. At the time, groups of teenagers dressed in suits and sunglasses stormed cinemas to watch Minions: The Rise of Gru, leading to disruptive behaviour and forcing cinema operators in the US to confront the growing disorder.
With the Minecraft film now in full release, cinema owners are calling for urgent action — and hoping for a swift end to the mayhem.
