In December 2022, we introduced you to the 4K premiere of Peter Jackson’s “The Frighteners” in an extensive article. This lovingly prepared 6-disc set left nothing to be desired and was considered one of the major home cinema highlights of the year by FILMSTARTS editor Daniel Fabian. However, one potential drawback for some prospective buyers was the price, which exceeded 60 euros.

Clearly, the still available set* is worth every cent. But not every film fan has a penchant for such lavish collector’s editions, which also take up a bit more space on the shelf. For those who have refrained from purchasing it until now, there is finally a very appealing alternative: “The Frighteners” will be re-released on October 30, 2024, as a 4K Blu-ray. And it comes as a Steelbook!

In the shop of distributor Turbine Medien, you can now get the film in Ultra-HD for under 40 euros (a Blu-ray version* will be released simultaneously and is available for 35 euros).

This 3-disc set includes the essential content of the previously released Ultimate Edition – namely, the theatrical version as well as the director’s cut, both brilliantly restored in 4K and fully synchronized. Additionally, there is a bonus disc featuring, among other things, a four-hour (!) making-of documentary. And let’s not forget that this new edition is also a limited collector’s item, stylishly presented in a Steelbook with a slipcase!

Fox), who works as a ghost hunter in the sleepy Californian town of Fairwater. However, his customers are unaware that he is actually in cahoots with the ghosts, which boosts his business! Until one day, a truly malevolent spirit terrorizes Fairwater, giving him the chance to do his job for real…

“The Frighteners” is a delightful mix of atmospheric horror and supernatural fun. Combined with the star power of Michael J. Fox and the phenomenal effects of WETA, this results in a cult classic that has lost none of its entertainment value to this day.
